St. Louis County is a county located in Missouri, in the Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 1016315 inhabitants. The July 2008 population estimate is 991830, It is the largest county by population in the U.S. state of Missouri. It covers total area of 523.69 square miles (1356.35 kmē), of which, 507.81 square miles (1315.22 kmē) of it is land and 15.89 square miles (41.15 kmē) of it is water, giving it the 76th largest by total area among Missouri's county.


As of the census of 2000, there were 1016315 people in the county, organized into 404312 households, and 270810 families living in the county. The population density was 2001.4 people per square mile (772.74/kmē), it would be the second most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Missouri. There were 423749 housing units at an average density of 834.5 per square mile (322.2/kmē). The average household size was 2.47 persons, and the average family size was 3.05 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29% from 25 to 44, 23.5% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 85.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 991830, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 73.42% White, 21.8% Black or African American, 0.26% American Indian, 3.12% Asian, 0.07% Native Hawaiian, and 1.32% from two or more races.

In 2000, 281608 pupils and students, of which 139669 are male and 141939 are female, 27.71% of the total population, are in the education system.
