St. Louis County is a one of the county from Minnesota's 87 counties, located in Midwestern Region (West North Central) of United States. The county has a population of 200528 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 196864, making it the sixth most populous county in Minnesota. It has total area of 6859.91 sq mi (17767.09 sq km), of which, 6225.16 square miles (16123.09 sq km) of it is land and 634.75 square miles (1643.99 sq km) of it is water, making it the largest by size in Minnesota. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Minnesota.

The population density was 32.2 people per square mile (12.43/kmē), giving it the 38th most densely populated county among the Minnesota. There were 95800 housing units at an average density of 15.4 per square mile (5.95/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.32 persons, and the average family size was 2.9 persons. The population's age distribution was 22.4% under the age of 18, 11.4% from 18 to 24, 25.9% from 25 to 44, 24.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.8 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 196864, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 185556 White, 2418 Black or African American, 4362 American Indian, 1478 Asian, 67 Native Hawaiian, and 2983 from two or more races.
