St. Joseph County is a county located in the United States of Indiana. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 265559 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 266680 in July 2008, making it the fifth most populous county in Indiana. The county spans an area of 460.97 sq mi (1193.91 sq km), of which, 457.34 square miles (1184.51 sq km) of it is land and 3.63 square miles (9.4 sq km) of it is water, makes it the 18th largest by total area in Indiana.

As of the census of 2000, there were 265559 people, 100743 households, and 66802 families residing in the county. The population density was 580.7 people per square mile (224.21/kmē), it is the fourth most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Indiana. There were 107013 housing units at an average density of 234 per square mile (90.35/kmē). The average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 11.8% from 18 to 24, 28% from 25 to 44, 20.9% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.8 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 266680, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83.91% White, 12.08% Black or African American, 0.41% American Indian, 1.69% Asian, 0.09% Native Hawaiian, and 1.83% from two or more races.
