St. James Parish, Louisiana is a parish of the United States of Louisiana. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 21216 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 21231, It is the 21st smallest parish by population in the U.S. state of Louisiana. It covers total area of 257.79 square miles (667.67 kmē), of which, 246.13 square miles (637.47 kmē) of it is land and 11.66 square miles (30.2 kmē) of it is water, it is the second smallest in terms of geographical size.


As of the census of 2000, there were 21216 people in the parish, organized into 6992 households, and 5550 families living in the parish. The population density was 86.2 people per square mile (33.28/kmē), it is the 23rd most densely populated parish in the U.S. state of Louisiana. There were 7605 housing units at an average density of 30.9 per square mile (11.93/kmē). The average household size was 3 persons, and the average family size was 3.43 persons. In the parish the population was spread out, with 29.5% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.1% who were 65 or older.
