The county encompasses an area of 642.4 sq mi (1663.81 square kilometre ), of which, 633.84 square miles (1641.64 square kilometre) of it is land and 8.56 square miles (22.17 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 40th largest by size in Arkansas.

Its population was estimated at 26336 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 48.23% White, 49.96% Black or African American, 0.32% American Indian, 0.63% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.83% from two or more races.
