St. Clair County is a county located in Michigan, in the Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 164235 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 168894, making it the 13th most populous county in Michigan. It has total area of 836.63 mi˛ (2166.86 sq km), of which, 724.37 square miles (1876.11 sq km) of it is land and 112.26 square miles (290.75 sq km) of it is water, it is the 38th largest by area in the U.S. state of Michigan.

As of the census of 2000, there were 164235 people, 62072 households, and 44631 families residing in the county. The population density was 226.7 people per square mile (87.53/km˛), making it the 16th most densely populated county in Michigan. There were 67107 housing units at an average density of 92.6 per square mile (35.75/km˛). The average household size was 2.62 people, and the average family size was 3.09 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.8% under the age of 18, 7.9% from 18 to 24, 30% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.5 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 168894, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.15% White, 2.45% Black or African American, 0.54% American Indian, 0.51% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.32% from two or more races.
