St. Clair County is a one of the county from Illinois's 102 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the St. Clair County is home to 256082 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 262291, It is the ninth largest in terms of population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 673.95 square miles (1745.52 kmē), of which, 663.81 square miles (1719.26 kmē) of it is land and 10.15 square miles (26.29 kmē) of it is water, making it Illinois's 29th largest county by total area.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 256082 residents, 96810 households, and 67323 families in the county. The population density was 385.8 people per square mile (148.96/kmē), it is Illinois's eighth most densely populated county. There were 104446 housing units at an average density of 157.3 per square mile (60.73/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.59 persons, and the average family size was 3.13 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 262291, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 67.46% White, 29.42% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 1.2% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.54% from two or more races.
