According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 673.95 square miles (1745.52 kmē), of which, 663.81 square miles (1719.26 kmē) of it is land and 10.15 square miles (26.29 kmē) of it is water, making it Illinois's 29th largest county by total area.

In the county the population was spread out, with 27.7% under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 262291, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 67.46% White, 29.42% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 1.2% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.54% from two or more races.
