Spartanburg County is a county located in South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 253791 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 280738, giving it the fourth largest population among South Carolina's county. It is spread over 819.14 sq mi (2121.56 kmē), of which, 810.93 square miles (2100.3 kmē ) of it is land and 8.22 square miles (21.29 kmē) of it is water, makes it the tenth largest by total area in South Carolina.

The population density was 313 people per square mile (120.85/kmē), it is fourth most densely populated county in South Carolina. There were 106986 housing units at an average density of 131.9 per square mile (50.93/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.52 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 24.8% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 29.9% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 280738, The racial makeup of the county was 76.04% White, 20.8% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 1.81% Asian, 0.05% Native Hawaiian, and 0.96% from two or more races.
