Spartanburg City is a city located in Spartanburg County, South Carolina, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 39673. The July 2008 population estimate is 39584, It is the seventh largest by population in the U.S. state of South Carolina. The city has a total area of 19.25 square miles (49.86 kmē), of which, 19.15 square miles (49.6 kmē) of it is land and 0.09 square miles (0.23 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 14th largest by total area in South Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 39673 residents, 15989 households, and 9717 families in the city. The population density was 2071.2 people per square mile (799.69/kmē), it is 16th most densely populated city in South Carolina.
