Sparta City is a city in the Randolph County, Illinois, United States. In 2000, the population was 4486. In July 2008, its estimated population was 4314, making it Illinois's 341st largest. The city has a total area of 9.18 sq mi (23.78 square kilometre), of which, 9.03 square miles (23.39 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.15 square miles (0.39 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 91st largest by total area in Illinois.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4486 people, 1783 households, and 1164 families residing in the city. The population density was 496.6 people per square mile (191.74/kmē), giving it the 228th least densely populated city among the Illinois.
