Southampton County, Virginia is a county located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. Southampton County had an official population of 17482 in 2000. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 18480, It is Virginia's 81st most populous county. The county spans an area of 602.35 sq mi (1560.08 sq km), of which, 599.56 square miles (1552.85 sq km) of it is land and 2.8 square miles (7.25 sq km) of it is water, it is the 12th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 17482 people in the county, organized into 6279 households, and 4505 families residing in the county. The population density was 29.2 people per square mile (11.27/kmē), it is Virginia's 12th least densely populated county. There were 7058 housing units at an average density of 11.8 per square mile (4.56/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 people, and the average family size was 3.02 people. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.7% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 25% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 111.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 112.5 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 18480, The racial makeup of the county was 10845 White, 7451 Black or African American, 34 American Indian, 33 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 116 from two or more races.
