South Dakota is a state in the United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 754844 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 804194, It is United States's fifth smallest by population . The state has a total area of 77116.49 sq mi (199730.79 square kilometre), of which, 75884.64 square miles (196540.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 1231.85 square miles (3190.48 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 17th largest by size in United States.

As of the census of 2000, there were 754844 residents, 290245 households, and 194330 families in the state. The population density was 9.9 people per square mile (3.82/kmē), it is fifth least densely populated state in United States. There were 323208 housing units at an average density of 4.3 per square mile (1.66/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.5 persons, and the average family size was 3.07 persons. The population's age distribution was 26.8% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.1 males. The median age of the state's population was 35.6 years, the median age of male residents at 34.4 and the median age of female residents at 36.7. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the state is 754844, The racial makeup of the state was 669404 White, 4685 Black or African American, 62283 American Indian, 4378 Asian, 261 Native Hawaiian, 10156 from two or more races and 3677 Ohter races.
