South Charleston City is a one of the Kanawha County, West Virginia, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 13390. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 12427, It is the 11th largest by population in the U.S. state of West Virginia. The city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 square kilometre), of which, 7.43 square miles (19.24 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.88 square miles (2.28 square kilometre) of it is water, giving it the 25th largest by total area among West Virginia. It is ranks sixth in the size of its inland waterways in West Virginia.

The population density was 1803 people per square mile (696.14/kmē), it is the 67th most densely populated city in the U.S. state of West Virginia. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 19.1% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 27.7% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 20% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 83.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males. The median age was 42.4 years, The median age of males was 40.2 years, for females the median age was 44.2 years. The racial or ethnic makeup of the city was 90.85% White, 6.67% Black or African American, 0.15% American Indian, 0.81% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, 1.28% from two or more races and 0.24% Other races.
