South Carolina


South Carolina, is a state located in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. South Carolina had an official population of 4012012 in 2000. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 4479800, giving it the 26th largest population among United States. It has total area of 32020.2 square miles (82931.94 square kilometre), of which, 30109.47 square miles (77983.17 square kilometre) of it is land and 1910.73 square miles (4948.77 square kilometre) of it is water, making it United States's 11th smallest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4012012 residents, 1533854 households, and 1072822 families in the state. The population density was 133.2 people per square mile (51.43/kmē), making it the 21st most densely populated state in United States. There were 1753670 housing units at an average density of 58.2 per square mile (22.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.02. In the state the population is diverse age-wise, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.6% from 25 to 44, 23% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males. The median age of the state's population was 35.4 years, The median age of males and females living in South Carolina was 34 and 36.7 years respectively. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 4012012, The racial or ethnic makeup of the state was 67.19% White, 29.54% Black or African American, 0.34% American Indian, 0.9% Asian, 0.04% Native Hawaiian, 1% from two or more races and 1% Other races.
