Sonoma County is a county located in the United States of California. In 2000, the population was 458614. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 466741, giving it the 17th largest population among California's county. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1768.23 square miles (4579.69 kmē), of which, 1575.88 square miles (4081.51 kmē) of it is land and 192.35 square miles (498.18 kmē) of it is water, makes it the 28th largest by total area in California.

As of the census of 2000, there were 458614 people in the county, organized into 172403 households, and 112397 families living in the county. The population density was 291 people per square mile (112.36/kmē), it is the 16th most densely populated county in the U.S. state of California. There were 183153 housing units at an average density of 116.2 per square mile (44.87/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.12 persons. In the county the population was spread out, with 24.5% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.9% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 103.1 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 106.3 females. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 466741, The racial makeup of the county was 89.73% White, 1.73% Black or African American, 1.55% American Indian, 3.85% Asian, 0.27% Native Hawaiian, and 2.86% from two or more races.
