Somerset County is a United States county located in the United States of Maryland. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 24747 inhabitants. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 26119, It is second least populous county in Maryland. It has total area of 610.78 mi˛ (1581.91 square kilometre), of which, 327.21 square miles (847.47 square kilometre) of it is land and 283.56 square miles (734.42 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the eighth largest by size in Maryland. It is ranks third in the size of its inland waterways in Maryland.

As of the census of 2000, there were 24747 people, 8361 households, and 5444 families residing in the county. The population density was 75.6 people per square mile (29.19/km˛), it would be the fourth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Maryland. There were 10092 housing units at an average density of 30.8 per square mile (11.89/km˛). The average household size was 2.37 people, and the average family size was 2.92 people. In the Somerset County, 18.5% of the population was under the age of 18, 15.7% were 18 to 24, 29.5% were 25 to 44, 22.2% were 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 114.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 119.1 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 26119, The racial makeup of the county was 55.96% White, 41.48% Black or African American, 0.4% American Indian, 0.89% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.26% from two or more races.
