Somerset County is a United States county located in the United States of Maine. It is home to over 50888 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 51377, It is Maine's ninth most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 4095.37 miē (10606.96 kmē ), of which, 3926.5 square miles (10169.59 kmē) of it is land and 168.87 square miles (437.37 kmē) of it is water, making it the third largest by size in Maine. It is ranks eighth in the size of its inland waterways in Maine.

The population density was 13 people per square mile (5.02/kmē), it is third least densely populated county in Maine. There were 28222 housing units at an average density of 7.2 per square mile (2.78/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 2.87 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 24.7% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.3% from 45 to 64, and 14.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 96 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 51377, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 50134 White, 216 Black or African American, 237 American Indian, 217 Asian, 26 Native Hawaiian, and 547 from two or more races.
