The July 2008 population estimate is 407515, It is the 20th largest county by population in the U.S. state of California. The county has a total area of 906.67 sq mi (2348.26 sq km), of which, 829.19 square miles (2147.59 sq km) of it is land and 77.48 square miles (200.67 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 12th smallest by total area among California's county.

The population density was 475.8 people per square mile (183.71/kmē), giving it the 11th most densely populated county among the California. There were 134513 housing units at an average density of 162.2 per square mile (62.63/kmē). The average household size was 2.9 and the average family size was 3.33. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 31.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 100.2 males. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 407515, The racial makeup of the county was 259256 White, 62591 Black or African American, 3898 American Indian, 57624 Asian, 3839 Native Hawaiian, and 20307 from two or more races.
