Socorro County is a county located in New Mexico, in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 18078 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 18180, It is New Mexico's 21st most populous county. It is spread over 6648.71 mi˛ (17220.08 sq km), of which, 6646.4 square miles (17214.1 sq km ) of it is land and 2.31 square miles (5.98 sq km) of it is water, it is the second largest by area in the U.S. state of New Mexico.

According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 18078 people, 6675 households, and 4491 families residing in the county. The population density was 2.7 people per square mile (1.04/km˛), it is the eighth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. There were 7808 housing units at an average density of 1.2 per square mile (0.46/km˛). The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.2. Age range in the county was well distributed with 28.4% under the age of 18, 12.6% from 18 to 24, 26.1% from 25 to 44, 22% from 45 to 64, and 10.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 103.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.9 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 18180, The racial makeup of the county was 14963 White, 201 Black or African American, 2348 American Indian, 311 Asian, 16 Native Hawaiian, and 341 from two or more races.
