Socorro City is a United States city located in the Socorro County, New Mexico, United States. In 2000, the population was 8877. Its population was estimated at 8989 in July 2008, It is the 24th largest by population in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The city extends throughout a territory of 14.44 sq mi (37.4 square kilometre ), of which, 14.41 square miles (37.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 28th largest by size in New Mexico.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8877 people in the city, organized into 457 households, and 284 families living in the city. The population density was 615.8 people per square mile (237.76/kmē), it is 77th most densely populated city in New Mexico.
