Socorro City is a United States city located in the Socorro County, New Mexico, United States. In 2000, the population was 8877. Its population was estimated at 8989 in July 2008, It is the 24th largest by population in the U.S. state of New Mexico. The city extends throughout a territory of 14.44 sq mi (37.4 square kilometre ), of which, 14.41 square miles (37.32 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 28th largest by size in New Mexico.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8877 people in the city, organized into 457 households, and 284 families living in the city. The population density was 615.8 people per square mile (237.76/kmē), it is 77th most densely populated city in New Mexico. There were 3940 housing units at an average density of 273.4 per square mile (105.56/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.44 persons, and the average family size was 3.02 persons. In the Socorro City, 25.4% of the population was under the age of 18, 16.9% were 18 to 24, 25.7% were 25 to 44, 20.4% were 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older.
