Smyth County is a United States county located in the United States of Virginia. As of 2000 the population was 33081. The July 2008 population estimate is 31905, giving it the 57th largest population among Virginia's county. It is spread over 452.31 square miles (1171.48 square kilometre), of which, 452.09 square miles (1170.91 square kilometre ) of it is land and 0.22 square miles (0.57 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 38th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

The population density was 73.2 people per square mile (28.26/kmē), it is Virginia's 79th most densely populated county. Age range in the county was well distributed with 21.6% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 28.1% from 25 to 44, 26% from 45 to 64, and 16.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males.
