Smithville City is a city located in the Clay County, Missouri, United States. In 2000, the population was 5514. The city's estimated population as of July 2008 was 8079, giving it the 119th largest population among Missouri. The city extends throughout a territory of 13.78 square miles (35.69 square kilometre ), of which, 13.71 square miles (35.51 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Missouri's 33rd largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5514 people, 2067 households, and 1530 families living in the city. The population density was 402.1 people per square mile (155.25/kmē), it is Missouri's 172nd least densely populated city. There were 2220 housing units at an average density of 161.9 per square mile (62.51/kmē). The average household size was 2.62 people, and the average family size was 3.07 people. In the city the population was spread out, with 28.4% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 34.3% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
