Smithfield Town is a one of the Isle of Wight County, Virginia, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. The town has a population of 6324 as per the 2000 census data. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 7034, making it Virginia's 117th largest. The town encompasses an area of 10.45 sq mi (27.07 square kilometre ), of which, 9.53 square miles (24.68 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.92 square miles (2.38 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 57th largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks 19 in the size of its inland waterways in Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 6324 people in the town, organized into 2438 households, and 1831 families residing in the town. The population density was 663.8 people per square mile (256.29/kmē), giving it the 243rd most densely populated town among the Virginia. In the town the population is diverse age-wise, with 27% under the age of 18, 7% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.6% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 89.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.4 males.
