Smithfield Town is a one of the Johnston County, North Carolina, located in Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. In 2000, town's population was 11510 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 12965, It is the 61st most populous in the U.S. state of North Carolina. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 11.44 sq mi (29.63 kmē), of which, 11.42 square miles (29.58 kmē) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 kmē) of it is water, it is the 68th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 11510 people, 4417 households, and 2675 families living in the town. The population density was 1007.6 people per square mile (389.04/kmē), it is 202nd most densely populated town in North Carolina. There were 4674 housing units at an average density of 409.3 per square mile (158.03/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.3 persons, and the average family size was 2.97 persons. In the town the population was spread out, with 21.3% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.9% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 100.6 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 102.5 females. The median age is 38.9 years, the median age of male residents at 35.3 and the median age of female residents at 43.3. The racial or ethnic makeup of the town was 62.66% White, 30.99% Black or African American, 0.43% American Indian, 0.63% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, 1.13% from two or more races and 4.14% Other races.
