Smith County is a United States county located in the United States of Tennessee. According to the latest population census dating back to 2000, the Smith County is home to 17712 inhabitants. Its population was estimated at 19107 in July 2008, It is 31st least populous county in Tennessee. The county has a total area of 325.35 sq mi (842.65 sq km), of which, 314.41 square miles (814.32 sq km) of it is land and 10.94 square miles (28.33 sq km) of it is water, making it Tennessee's 25th smallest county by total area.

In the county the population was distributed as follows: 25.5% under the age of 18, 8% from 18 to 24, 30% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.4 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 19107, The racial makeup of the county was 18290 White, 520 Black or African American, 74 American Indian, 44 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 178 from two or more races.
