Smith County is a county located in Mississippi, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. It is home to over 16182 people (2000 census). Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 15809, making it the 26th least populous county in Mississippi. The county extends throughout a territory of 637.27 sq mi (1650.52 square kilometre ), of which, 635.89 square miles (1646.95 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.38 square miles (3.57 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 30th largest by size in Mississippi.

The population density was 25.4 people per square mile (9.81/kmē), giving it the 19th least densely populated county among the Mississippi. There were 7005 housing units at an average density of 11 per square mile (4.25/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.65 persons, and the average family size was 3.13 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 27.5% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 27.3% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.6 males. Its population was estimated at 15809 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 11905 White, 3782 Black or African American, 17 American Indian, 15 Asian, 22 Native Hawaiian, and 68 from two or more races.
