Smith County is a United States county located in the United States of Kansas. As of 2000 the population was 4536. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 3901, making it the 30th least populous county in Kansas. The county has a total area of 896.53 sq mi (2322 sq km), of which, 895.43 square miles (2319.15 sq km) of it is land and 1.1 square miles (2.85 sq km) of it is water, it is the 32nd largest by area in the U.S. state of Kansas.

In the county Population was distributed with 21.7% under the age of 18, 4.7% from 18 to 24, 22.1% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 27.9% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 92.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.4 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 3901, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 3856 White, 7 Black or African American, 11 American Indian, 1 Asian, 4 Native Hawaiian, and 22 from two or more races.
