According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 44542, It is the 14th smallest in terms of population. Its area is just over 6347.46 square miles (16439.85 square kilometre), of which, 6286.78 square miles (16282.69 square kilometre) of it is land and 60.68 square miles (157.16 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the fifth largest in terms of geographical size.
