Simpson County, Mississippi is a county located in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 27639. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 28034, It is the 34th most populous county in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The county has a total area of 590.53 square miles (1529.47 square kilometre), of which, 588.73 square miles (1524.8 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.8 square miles (4.66 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 36th largest by size in Mississippi.


According to 2000 Census Bureau, there were 27639 residents, 10076 households, and 7381 families in the county. The population density was 46.9 people per square mile (18.11/kmē), it is the 37th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 11307 housing units at an average density of 19.2 per square mile (7.41/kmē). The average household size was 2.65 persons, and the average family size was 3.14 persons. In the county Age distribution was 27.9% under the age of 18, 9.4% from 18 to 24, 27.5% from 25 to 44, 22.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 105.9 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 110.6 females. As of July 2008, the estimated population was 28034, The racial makeup of the county was 64.55% White, 34.53% Black or African American, 0.13% American Indian, 0.19% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 0.59% from two or more races.
