According to the 2000 census it had a population of 5788 inhabitants. It is 110th most populous in North Carolina. The census designated place spans an area of 6.57 square miles (17.02 square kilometre), of which, 6.56 square miles (16.99 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 125th largest by area in the U.S. state of North Carolina.

As of the census of 2000, there were 5788 people, 2280 households, and 1566 families living in the census designated place. The population density was 882 people per square mile (340.54/kmē), it is the 253rd most densely populated census designated place in the U.S. state of North Carolina.
