Sierra County, New Mexico is a county located in the Western Region (Mountain) of United States. Sierra County had an official population of 13270 in 2000. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12437, It is the ninth smallest county by population in the U.S. state of New Mexico. It covers total area of 4236.3 mi˛ (10971.97 sq km), of which, 4180.23 square miles (10826.75 sq km) of it is land and 56.07 square miles (145.22 sq km) of it is water, making it New Mexico's 12th largest county by total area. It is ranks first in the size of its inland waterways in New Mexico.

The population density was 3.2 people per square mile (1.24/km˛), it would be the ninth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of New Mexico. There were 8727 housing units at an average density of 2.1 per square mile (0.81/km˛). The average household size was 2.13 people, and the average family size was 2.75 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 20.1% under the age of 18, 5.4% from 18 to 24, 19.5% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 27.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 100 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.7 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 12437, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 95.75% White, 0.58% Black or African American, 2.01% American Indian, 0.2% Asian, 0.09% Native Hawaiian, and 1.37% from two or more races.
