As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 70880, It is Michigan's 26th most populous county. The county extends throughout a territory of 540.73 square miles (1400.48 square kilometre ), of which, 538.73 square miles (1395.3 square kilometre) of it is land and 2 square miles (5.18 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the seventh smallest in terms of geographical size.
