It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 87660, It is 12th most populous county in Minnesota. It has total area of 451 mi˛ (1168.08 sq km), of which, 436.3 square miles (1130.01 sq km) of it is land and 14.7 square miles (38.07 sq km) of it is water, it is the 13th smallest by area in the U.S. state of Minnesota.

The population density was 147.6 people per square mile (56.99/km˛), making it the ninth most densely populated county in Minnesota. There were 22827 housing units at an average density of 52.3 per square mile (20.19/km˛). The average household size was 2.91 persons, and the average family size was 3.27 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 30.9% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 33.9% from 25 to 44, 18.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 104.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 103.2 males. Its population was estimated at 87660 in July 2008, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 83882 White, 1366 Black or African American, 366 American Indian, 1041 Asian, 24 Native Hawaiian, and 981 from two or more races.
