Shenandoah County is a county located in Virginia, in the Southern Region (South Atlantic) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 35075 inhabitants. In July 2008, its estimated population was 40777, making it Virginia's 42nd largest county. The county has a total area of 512.53 square miles (1327.45 sq km), of which, 512.2 square miles (1326.59 sq km) of it is land and 0.32 square miles (0.83 sq km) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.

As of the census of 2000, there were 35075 people in the county, organized into 14296 households, and 10066 families living in the county. The population density was 68.5 people per square mile (26.45/kmē), it is the 83rd most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Virginia. There were 16709 housing units at an average density of 32.6 per square mile (12.59/kmē). The average household size was 2.42 and the average family size was 2.86. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 22.3% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 26.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.8 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 40777, The racial makeup of the county was 39204 White, 832 Black or African American, 69 American Indian, 283 Asian, 6 Native Hawaiian, and 383 from two or more races.
