Shelby County is a county located in the United States of Tennessee. In 2000, the population was 897472. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 906825, It is Tennessee's most populous county. The county encompasses an area of 783.63 sq mi (2029.59 sq km ), of which, 754.53 square miles (1954.22 sq km) of it is land and 29.1 square miles (75.37 sq km) of it is water, it is the largest in terms of geographical size. It is ranks ninth in the size of its inland waterways in Tennessee.

The population density was 1189.4 people per square mile (459.23/kmē), it is the most densely populated county in the U.S. state of Tennessee. There were 362954 housing units at an average density of 481 per square mile (185.72/kmē). The average household size was 2.6 persons, and the average family size was 3.18 persons. In the county Age distribution was 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 31.1% from 25 to 44, 21% from 45 to 64, and 10% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.8 males. As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 906825, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 44.48% White, 51.96% Black or African American, 0.33% American Indian, 2.15% Asian, 0.08% Native Hawaiian, and 1% from two or more races.
