Shelby County is a county located in the United States of Ohio. In 2000, the population was 47910. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 48919, It is 49th most populous county in Ohio. The county encompasses an area of 411.03 square miles (1064.56 square kilometre ), of which, 409.27 square miles (1060 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.76 square miles (4.56 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Ohio's 18th smallest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 47910 people in the county, organized into 17636 households, and 13083 families living in the county. The population density was 117.1 people per square mile (45.21/kmē), it is Ohio's 44th most densely populated county. There were 18682 housing units at an average density of 45.6 per square mile (17.61/kmē). The average household size was 2.68 persons, and the average family size was 3.13 persons. In the county Age distribution was 28.6% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.3% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 96.4 males. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the county is 48919, The racial makeup of the county was 95.24% White, 1.97% Black or African American, 0.2% American Indian, 1.2% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 1.34% from two or more races.
