Shelby County is a county in the United States of Iowa. The population of the county was 13173 as per the 2000 census data. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 12131, making it Iowa's 63rd largest county. The county extends throughout a territory of 591.37 sq mi (1531.64 square kilometre ), of which, 590.83 square miles (1530.24 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.54 square miles (1.4 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 25th largest by size in Iowa.

The population density was 22.3 people per square mile (8.61/kmē), it is Iowa's 30th least densely populated county. There were 5459 housing units at an average density of 9.2 per square mile (3.55/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.49 persons, and the average family size was 2.99 persons. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 26.4% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.4% from 45 to 64, and 20.4% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 95.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.3 males. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 12131, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 11970 White, 14 Black or African American, 37 American Indian, 39 Asian, 0 Native Hawaiian, and 71 from two or more races.
