Shelby County is a one of the county from Illinois's 102 counties, located in Midwestern Region (East North Central) of United States. As per the 2000 census, county has a population of 22893 inhabitants. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 21748, making it Illinois's 56th largest county. The county has a total area of 768.05 sq mi (1989.24 square kilometre), of which, 758.51 square miles (1964.53 square kilometre) of it is land and 9.54 square miles (24.71 square kilometre) of it is water, it is the 18th largest by area in the U.S. state of Illinois.

The population's age distribution was 25% under the age of 18, 7.6% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males. In July 2008, its estimated population was 21748, The racial makeup of the county was 98.47% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 0.17% American Indian, 0.25% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.48% from two or more races.
