Shelby County is a county located in Alabama, in the Southern Region (East South Central) of United States. According to the 2000 census it had a population of 143293 inhabitants. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 187784, It is the fifth largest county by population in the U.S. state of Alabama. Its area is just over 809.53 mi˛ (2096.67 sq km), of which, 794.69 square miles (2058.24 sq km) of it is land and 14.83 square miles (38.41 sq km) of it is water, making it Alabama's 20th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 143293 people, 54631 households, and 40617 families living in the county. The population density was 180.3 people per square mile (69.61/km˛), making it the ninth most densely populated county in Alabama. There were 59302 housing units at an average density of 74.6 per square mile (28.8/km˛). It has an average household size was 2.59 persons, and the average family size was 3.04 persons. In the county Age distribution was 26.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.7% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 8.5% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 104 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 108 females. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 187784, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 163448 White, 19418 Black or African American, 593 American Indian, 2784 Asian, 27 Native Hawaiian, and 1514 from two or more races.
