Shelby City is a city in the Cleveland County, North Carolina, United States. As of 2000 the population was 19477. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 21449, It is the 37th largest in terms of population. The city spans an area of 18.16 mi˛ (47.03 sq km), of which, 18.14 square miles (46.98 sq km) of it is land and 0.02 square miles (0.05 sq km) of it is water, giving it the 35th largest by total area among North Carolina.
