Shawnee County is a county in the United States of Kansas. The population of the county was 169871 as per the 2000 census data. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 174709, making it the third most populous county in Kansas. The county has a total area of 556.32 mi˛ (1440.86 square kilometre), of which, 549.82 square miles (1424.03 square kilometre) of it is land and 6.5 square miles (16.83 square kilometre) of it is water, makes it the 11th smallest by total area in Kansas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 169871 residents, 68920 households, and 44685 families in the county. The population density was 309 people per square mile (119.31/km˛), giving it the fourth most densely populated county among the Kansas. There were 73768 housing units at an average density of 134.2 per square mile (51.81/km˛). The average household size was 2.39 people, and the average family size was 2.98 people. In the county the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 8.8% from 18 to 24, 28.4% from 25 to 44, 23.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90 males. The county's estimated population as of July 2008 was 174709, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 85.46% White, 9.25% Black or African American, 1.37% American Indian, 1.37% Asian, 0.06% Native Hawaiian, and 2.5% from two or more races.
