Shasta County is a county located in California, in the Western Region (Pacific) of United States. As of 2000 the population was 163256. As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 180214, It is the 29th most populous county in the U.S. state of California. The county has a total area of 3847.44 square miles (9964.82 sq km), of which, 3785.19 square miles (9803.6 sq km) of it is land and 62.24 square miles (161.2 sq km) of it is water, making it California's 15th largest county by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 163256 people, 63426 households, and 44002 families living in the county. The population density was 43.1 people per square mile (16.64/kmē), making its California's 38th most densely populated county. There were 68810 housing units at an average density of 18.2 per square mile (7.03/kmē). The average household size was 2.52 people, and the average family size was 2.98 people. In the county Age distribution was 26.1% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 males there were 105.2 females. For every 100 males age 18 and over, there were 109.7 females. In July 2008, its estimated population was 180214, The racial or ethnic makeup of the county was 162491 White, 1996 Black or African American, 5339 American Indian, 4166 Asian, 247 Native Hawaiian, and 5975 from two or more races.
