Sharkey County is a United States county located in the United States of Mississippi. Sharkey County had an official population of 6580 in 2000. Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 5556, It is the second smallest in terms of population. The county has a total area of 434.88 sq mi (1126.33 sq km), of which, 427.71 square miles (1107.76 sq km) of it is land and 7.17 square miles (18.57 sq km) of it is water, making it the 16th smallest by size in Mississippi.

The population density was 15.4 people per square mile (5.95/kmē), it is fifth least densely populated county in Mississippi. There were 2416 housing units at an average density of 5.6 per square mile (2.16/kmē). The average household size was 2.99 persons, and the average family size was 3.56 persons. In the county Population was distributed with 33% under the age of 18, 10.4% from 18 to 24, 24.8% from 25 to 44, 20.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.4 males. The July 2008 population estimate is 5556, The racial makeup of the county was 29.55% White, 69.2% Black or African American, 0.25% American Indian, 0.34% Asian, 0% Native Hawaiian, and 0.65% from two or more races.
