Its population in July 2008 was estimated to be about 23016, making it the 25th most populous county in Kansas. Its area is just over 640.51 square miles (1658.91 square kilometre), of which, 639.52 square miles (1656.35 square kilometre) of it is land and 0.99 square miles (2.56 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 27th smallest by size in Kansas.
