As of 2000 the population was 28507. giving it the 36th largest population among Maryland. It covers total area of 15.6 square miles (40.4 sq km), of which, 12.9 square miles (33.41 sq km) of it is land and 2.7 square miles (6.99 sq km) of it is water, it is the 23rd largest by area in the U.S. state of Maryland. It is ranks 12 in the size of its inland waterways in Maryland.
