The July 2008 population estimate is 482863, It is second most populous county in Kansas. The county spans an area of 1009.41 square miles (2614.36 square kilometre), of which, 999.38 square miles (2588.38 square kilometre) of it is land and 10.03 square miles (25.98 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Kansas's 16th largest county by total area.
