As of July 2008, the population was estimated at 8048, It is fourth least populous county in Arkansas. The county extends throughout a territory of 668.51 square miles (1731.43 square kilometre ), of which, 667.15 square miles (1727.91 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.36 square miles (3.52 square kilometre) of it is water, making it Arkansas's 35th largest county by total area.

The population density was 12.4 people per square mile (4.79/kmē), it would be the fifth least densely populated county in the U.S. state of Arkansas. There were 4292 housing units at an average density of 6.4 per square mile (2.47/kmē). The average household size was 2.33 people, and the average family size was 2.83 people. In the county the population is diverse age-wise, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 24.5% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 19.2% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 98 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.8 males. Its population was estimated at 8048 in July 2008, The racial makeup of the county was 7822 White, 35 Black or African American, 66 American Indian, 12 Asian, 1 Native Hawaiian, and 112 from two or more races.
