Scranton City is a United States city located in the Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, United States. As per the 2000 census, city has a population of 76415 inhabitants. According to July 2008 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 72233, It is sixth most populous in Pennsylvania. It has total area of 25.44 square miles (65.89 kmē), of which, 25.23 square miles (65.35 kmē) of it is land and 0.21 square miles (0.54 kmē) of it is water, making it Pennsylvania's 11th largest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 76415 people in the city, organized into 31303 households, and 18112 families living in the city. The population density was 3029.2 people per square mile (1169.58/kmē), it is Pennsylvania's 386th most densely populated city. There were 35336 housing units at an average density of 1400.6 per square mile (540.77/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.29 persons, and the average family size was 3.01 persons. In the city the population is diverse age-wise, with 20.8% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 25.5% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.1% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 87 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83 males. The median age was 38.8 years, The median age of males was 36.5 years, for females the median age was 41 years. The racial makeup of the city was 71480 White, 2304 Black or African American, 85 American Indian, 823 Asian, 15 Native Hawaiian, 818 from two or more races and 890 Ohter races.
