Its population was estimated at 22850 in July 2008, It is the 74th largest county by population in the U.S. state of Virginia. The county comprises an area of 538.63 miē (1395.05 kmē), of which, 536.58 square miles (1389.74 kmē) of it is land and 2.05 square miles (5.31 kmē) of it is water, it is the 19th largest by area in the U.S. state of Virginia.
