As of July 2008, the estimated population of the county is 36508, It is the 66th largest county by population in the U.S. state of North Carolina. It has total area of 320.64 square miles (830.45 square kilometre), of which, 319.14 square miles (826.57 square kilometre) of it is land and 1.5 square miles (3.88 square kilometre) of it is water, making it the 19th smallest by size in North Carolina.

The population density was 112.8 people per square mile (43.55/kmē), it is the 44th most populated county in terms of population density. There were 14693 housing units at an average density of 46 per square mile (17.76/kmē). It has an average household size was 2.61 persons, and the average family size was 3.1 persons. In the county the population was distributed as follows: 28.1% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 23.4% from 45 to 64, and 11.3% who were 65 or older. For every 100 females there were 88.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83 males. It has an estimated population (as of July 2008) of 36508, The racial makeup of the county was 49.55% White, 38.21% Black or African American, 10.06% American Indian, 0.57% Asian, 0.02% Native Hawaiian, and 1.59% from two or more races.
